Attorney Garofano's primary practice area is civil litigation concentrating in negligence, commercial law, and real property and environmental law. In addition to personal injury cases, Attorney Garofano has represented claimants in cases brought against major manufacturers of medical devices and pharmaceutical drugs. Many of these complex product liability lawsuits have occurred in multidistrict litigation (MDL), which is a special federal legal procedure designed to speed the process of handling complex cases.
Attorney Garofano has also represented a diverse range of business clients, including both legal entities and individuals, in a wide array of commercial matters, breach of contract, tortious interference, misrepresentation, partnership disputes and related business torts as well as bankruptcy. He has both pursued and defended claims brought under a host of consumer protection statutes, including Connecticut's Unfair Trade Practices Act ("CUTPA") and the motor vehicle Lemon Law. Attorney Garofano also has substantial experience in handling landlord-tenant matters representing both landlords and tenants. In construction matters, Attorney Garofano has represented homeowners in actions against general contractors, subcontractors and insurance companies under Connecticut's Home Improvement Act.
Regarding real property and environmental law, Attorney Garofano represents clients in a wide variety of matters ranging from boundary disputes to environmental contamination cases requiring multi-year abatement and remediation projects. He also handles transaction work in the field of real property and environmental law including covenants, easements, and property transfers. Attorney Garofano handles other land use matters as well including variances, subdivisions, and siting of telecommunication and cellular towers.
Attorney Garofano is admitted practice in Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island. He is admitted to practice in federal courts in Connecticut and Rhode Island including United States District Court for the District of Connecticut, United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Connecticut and the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He is also admitted to practice in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Attorney Garofano is also admitted to practice in both branches of the Mohegan Tribal Court System for the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut, which are Gaming Disputes Court and the Tribal Court.
Attorney Garofano has been selected to the Super Lawyers' 2016, 2017 and 2018 Connecticut Rising Stars as a Top Rated Civil Litigation Attorney. The Rising Stars List recognizes no more than 2.5 percent of attorneys in Connecticut.
Attorney Garofano graduated from Albany Law School, summa cum laude and received the American Bar Association Section of State and Local Government Law Award for Excellence in Land Use and Local Government Law. While in law school, he served as a Note & Comment Editor on the ALBANY LAW REVIEW Editorial Board and interned with the United States Attorney's Office, the United States District Court, the New York Department of Public Service and the New York State Senate. Prior to joining Conway, Londregan, Sheehan & Monaco, P.C., Attorney Eric J. Garofano served as a law clerk to the Judges of the Connecticut Superior Court. He also served as a clerk in the Criminal Clerk's Office in Geographic Area 15 at New Britain.
Attorney Garofano is a member of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, and the Rhode Island Bar Association. He is also the Young Lawyer Liaison for New London County Bar Association. He sits on the board of the Southeastern Connecticut Cultural Coalition, an organization devoted to fostering region-wide economic growth in New London County by optimizing the cultural sector and creative business assets of the region. Attorney Garofano also serves on the Board of Directors for the Stonington Community Center (COMO), the Mystic Flag Committee, and the Mystic Lions Club and is a member of the New London Rotary Club. He resides in Mystic with his wife Kerry.
